no more sunday shows

christian's signature word is "debacle". he uses it to describe anything that goes wrong, or anything bad for you. today's concert outing clearly fell within the criteria...and then some.

brand new, one of my top five favorite bands was playing at warped tour, along with 6 or 7 other bands we had anticipated seeing live. seeing brand new at warped tour would have been the 4th attempted time to see them perform. we have never been successful.

wayyy back in december we planned on seeing them with the starting line (a band we have attempted to see twice, failing twice. always catching their closing song.) but, we passed because we knew very little about the band and figured we would catch them next time around. ahem.

of course i fall in love with their music.

second attempt was the skate and surf festival in april. a sunday show, so we needed to stop at a super market for some beer, liquor stores are closed in NY on sundays. on the way to asbury park we figured we would stop by the costco in ocean township, NJ. oh, but they dont sell beer. brand new was scheduled to go on at 420, it was 4. we were going sober. fine. until i stopped dead in my tracks in the parking lot, realizing i forgot the tickets. christian and jeff will never let me live that down.

in june we searched ticketmaster and you can imagine our excitment to see that brand news second album release party was in the city and so we tried...and tried...and tried to get tickets the sold out show.

fuck a sold out show.

ok. todays show began at one. christian picked me up at 1130 to ensure we would get there on time. liquor purchased last night. tickets in hand. we joked about how funny it would be if we missed them today. i mean, that would just be impossible.

our smiles faded when we saw that traffic was backed up at the toll, and we were still two exits away from asbury park. backed up, as in people turning off their engines and sitting on their cars rooftops. eating snacks. i shit you not. and walking around on the fucking garden state parkway.

we quickly got out of that lane and drove down to the exit, bypassing a million punk rock kids and squeezing in line right before the exit. shady, yes. but we were some desperate peoples and it was 1245. we made it off the exit and then smack dab into the line of traffic, the SINGLE line of traffic, snaking its way through the town.

two hours late we are still in the car. and we are not near the convention center. we were going so slow we initiated conversations with the people riding in cars around us. 5 miles away we were tempted to get out and walk. i opened the vodka bottle and in a short time, i found the whole situation pretty funny.

after about 3 detours and a dozen times getting cut off we parked about 10 blocks away from the convention center. ok time to go, its only 4, maybe they didnt play yet. no way, they're big now, they should be going on late.

chris, you remembered to remember which block we parked on right? i have no memory when i drink, i just figured he would take note of the street sign. but we'll come back to that...

slightly tipsy and very giggly we walked and laughed and smiled at the older people walking in and out of the bed and breakfasts. ok, waited on line, waited on the wrong line, fuckers, and then got in. unbelievably crowded. wrestled our way to the playlist. brand new went on at 3. we heard the starting line finish their closing song on the stage behind us.

what a cruel joke.

in the 3 hours we were there we saw two bands (count the stars and all american rejects). both excellent.

i did not like getting kicked in the head by a 10 year old crowdsurfer though. good looking out chris, who is like 6'7 and should see these potential problems before they smash their sneakers into the side of my head.

we left during taking back sunday to beat the rush.

now where did we park?

one hour we walked around town, up and down, for one hour. i wanted to cry. or make someone drive us around looking for our car. when we saw the same bed and breakfast for a second time we stopped and headed back to the show to start over.

but first lets try one more left in that direction. and suddenly it all clicked and we found the car in about 15 minutes.

wrong turn on the way home. the same wrong turn we made going there. not like it mattered timewise but i thought it to be amusing.

i have just come to accept the fact this band is one that i am not destined to see, try as i may. i get it now. *waves white flag*
