3:36 p.m. ~ 2003-10-01
9 months monday i had cravings-cashews, cigarettes, and keith. the campus center had no cashews so i walked to the deli. the deli had no matches, or lighters. keith had no cell phone service. wait, i lied there. the deli did have lighters, they were shaped like cowboy pistols. i rarely smoke. when i do, its when im out having a drink, and drinking beer. but monday i had cravings. i promised myself i would only smoke cigarettes from the pack until my sister gave birth. so 800 yesterday morning she called from her boyfriends house to say she was having contractions. i didnt answer the phone, one cannot while in a comatised sleep state as i was. my mom did and then proceeded to run around the house and simultaneously wake me up, gather my sisters hospital bags, make phone calls to everyone in the tri-state area, and dress herself. my mother is like me, a timid driver. the hospital is located off hylan blvd, which happens to be one of the busiest streets on the island. no one was letting us pass to get to the side of the road the hospital would be coming up on, rush hour traffic is the unfriendliest. but, not so impossible with a police escort. my mother flagged down a cop (we were across the street from the 122 prescint) and he got us there in about 3 minutes. he sped, and my mom blew the horn the entire way because people were cutting us off trying to get out of the cops way. self-defeating. before we left my house my sister called her boyfriend to let him know she was going into labor, he promptly hung up on her before she could even get the word "contraction" out. if anyone in manhattan saw a 22 year old man running full speed towards south ferry, that was john. hes now a father. from the floor to the ferry in 8 minutes. 12 hours later Brianna was born. 1023 pm. i cannot describe her to you. she looks like a glo-worm. and i only smoked one of those cigarettes.
